Why Groups Like NiziU and WayV Are Still K-Pop, According To A Korean Ethnomusicologist & Music Critic - Trending News

All nine members of JYP Entertainment‘s latest girl group, NiziU, are Japanese, and all their songs are Japanese too. However, according to company founder J. Y. Park, NiziU is still a K-Pop group, dubbed “K-Pop 3.0.” The same goes for SM Entertainment‘s WayV. The China-based unit of NCT, WayV comprises members of Chinese, Thai, and Taiwanese nationality, and they sing in Chinese too. Yet, they’re still considered a K-Pop group by many.

Groups like these are on the rise, but without Korean members or Korean songs, how can they be considered K-Pop? Korean music critic and ethnomusicologist Youngdae Kim, Ph.D. set out to answer that question in a recent interview with Arirang.

Youngdae Kim explained that as a Korean music critic, what makes a group “K-Pop” is one of the most frequently asked questions he receives and one of the most discussed topics in the K-Pop world as a whole—namely because “there’s no clear-cut answer.” But, while Kim says he doesn’t have the perfect answer to the conundrum, he does have an explanation that sheds some light on how groups like NiziU and WayV can be considered K-Pop acts.

First and foremost, Youngdae Kim says that what many people don’t realize is that this isn’t a completely new concept. It actually began in the early 2000s, Kim says, when K-Pop agencies like SM Entertainment began to heavily promote their artists globally and sell them in the overseas market. One of the first examples of K-Pop crossover, according to the ethnomusicologist, is BoA.

Kim went on to explain that BoA was “trained as two different artists: [as a] Korean artist for the Korean market, and as a Japanese artist.” While BoA herself isn’t Japanese, she was trained as a J-Pop artist to tackle the Japanese market alongside her K-Pop pursuits. According to Youngdae Kim, that was the first phase of “cultural technology.”

If the term “cultural technology” sounds familiar to you, that may be because it’s part of NCT’s name, which stands for Neo Culture Technology. Cultural technology is a system created by Lee Soo Man, founder of SM Entertainment, to promote the Korean Wave around the world. According to Youngdae Kim, cultural technology has three broad phases. The first encompasses artists like BoA, trained as foreign artists when they tackle foreign markets.

The next phase of this K-Pop evolution is a hybrid model—a Korean group with foreign or diasporic members. These groups are everywhere in Korea today, and no one questions whether they’re K-Pop or not—think TWICE (with Japanese members) or Girls’ Generation (with American-born Korean members). Kim says that groups like these were created so the members could act as a “mediator or cultural bridge” in overseas markets.

This leads to the third and final stage, which Kim explained is “all-foreign K-Pop groups for the foreign market.” This is the model that NiziU and WayV use, and agencies like HYBE and SM Entertainment have plans to create future groups this way too. “That’s kind of an inevitable evolution and the latest development of K-Pop,” says Kim.

The critic went on to say that whether you can call these groups K-Pop depends on how you define the term. While some think K-Pop is based on the ethnicity or nationality of the members, the company, or the market, others—like J.Y. Park—have a different definition. Kim says that to J.Y. Park, NiziU is a K-Pop group because they’re based on the same “technology, know-how, money, and processes” developed by K-Pop, just like TWICE and ITZY.

Ultimately, Youngdae Kim says it’s difficult to distill the essence of K-Pop into one factor. However, he says, when you take the core elements of beautiful young men and women performing great songs with great choreography, you get a combination that represents K-Pop—a combination that can be replicated without any Korean members or Korean language at all.

HYBE’s Security Is So Tight It Took Jessi Half An Hour Just To Enter The Building - Trending News

As the headquarters of so many popular artists, HYBE takes its security so seriously that SEVENTEEN‘s Jeonghan sometimes gets trapped in the building from one of the security measures. When Jessi came to interview TXT, she proved once again just how tight the building’s security is.

At the start of the Showterview episode, Jessi pointed out how different the atmosphere was from the show’s usual recording space. She noted, “Compared to SBS, it’s way more serious in here.”

The process of entering HYBE took much longer than she anticipated. Jessi revealed, “To enter this room, it took me as long as thirty minutes.”

On top of the long security process just to enter the building, there were also strict rules to follow such as, “Photographs are not allowed!”

There was so much to go through that Jessi joked, “I won’t be able to come here again.”

With security as strict and intense as this, Jessi proved there’s no need to worry about the safety of SEVENTEEN, BTS, TXT, ENHYPEN, or the company’s other artists.

Red Velvet Irene’s Sweet Gesture To Her Hair Stylist When They First Met Proves Her True Personality - Trending News

This week, Red Velvet treated their staff to lovingly prepared meals in “Queendom Restaurant,” a two-part YouTube series in which the members gave back to those who’ve been working hard for them. Naturally, the staff had plenty of stories to share about the Red Velvet members—including hairstylist Soon Yi, who had the sweetest memory of Irene from years gone by.

While the Red Velvet members and their staff were reliving their memories of the group’s Japanese concert tour, hairstylist Soon Yi suddenly remembered a story from when she first began working with Red Velvet. Soon Yi and the rest of the Soonsoo salon staff have been styling the group for years, but her trip to Japan with them was her first “business trip” for Red Velvet.

Soon Yi went on to reveal that the special memory took place when she arrived back in Korea with the group. “Irene and I weren’t very close back then,” she recalled, but that didn’t stop the Red Velvet leader from making a totally sweet gesture towards the hairstylist. “[Irene] came to me saying, ‘Ssaem~’,” says Soon Yi ; ssaem is a shortened version of the Korean word for “teacher,” which is used as a term of respect towards professionals.

Soon Yi admits she was “so embarrassed” to receive Irene’s attention at first because fans around them were snapping pictures of the members. “But she came to me,” says the stylist, “and everyone looked at me.” Then, when Soon Yi asked Irene “What’s up?” Irene proceeded to give her a gift.

Irene looked surprised as Soon Yi told the story, confessing, “Did I do that? I can’t remember.” The hairstylist joked that Irene’s memory must be faltering because she “got older,” but went on to reveal just how sweet the leader’s gift towards her must be. “It’s my favorite thing,” Soon Yi revealed, adding, “I always buy it when I’m in Japan.”

"[Irene] said, ‘Ssaem~ I bought it for you.’ I opened it and saw…" — Soon Yi

The gift was toe socks! As soon as Soon Yi reminded Irene of the gift, she instantly remembered the story herself. While the members were cracking up at the thought of Irene’s unusual gift choice, Soon Yi shared her own feelings on the memory.

"It wasn’t even funny; it was so… touching." — Soon Yi

This isn’t the first time Soon Yi has shared her honest feelings about Irene’s personality. Last October, along with several other Soonsoo stylists, Soon Yi uploaded an Instagram post defending Irene’s character against attitude accusations and asking others to refrain from judging her based on one interaction.

It’s also not the first time Irene has been known to treat those who work with her to thoughtful gifts. In the past, she’s gifted Red Velvet’s dancers with luxury pajamas and slippers, immune-strengthening vitamins, handwritten letters, and even eight sets of Apple AirPods Pro headphones.

CLC’s Sorn Calls On Fans To Stop Using Fu Yaning’s Diss To Yujin From “Girls Planet 999” - Trending News

Girls Planet 999 has been underway for several weeks, but contestant Fu Yaning‘s diss towards CLC‘s Yujin on the show’s first episode is still a hot topic among viewers. Now, in a new live broadcast, Yujin’s fellow CLC member Sorn has called on fans to stop repeating the diss online.

In the first few episodes of Girls Planet 999, all 99 contestants were given the chance to show off their skills with cover performances. For her performance with fellow C Group contestants, popular Chinese trainee Fu Yaning decided to perform a cover of CLC’s iconic hit, “HELICOPTER.”

When host Yeo Jin Goo asked Fu Yaning if she’d be able to present a good stage with Yujin, one of the original singers, in the audience that day, she showed her confidence by stating that her team “can do better than the original,” showing a side only they can pull off.

That’s when Fu Yaning went on to tell Yujin the line that’s been sweeping the internet since it happened: “We go up… but you don’t.” Fu Yaning was referencing the lyrics to CLC’s song—”We go up, helicopter.”

While Yujin initially appeared to be shocked at Fu Yaning’s unprovoked diss, she ended up giving the classiest response by dancing to “HELICOPTER” herself. After Fu Yaning’s team performed their cover, Yujin went on to say “It was powerful and bursting with energy.”

Unsurprisingly, the harsh and unexpected diss went viral among K-Pop fans after it was previewed on Mnet. Since then, many people have meme-ified the line, continuing to repeat it on social media—and Yujin’s fellow CLC member Sorn isn’t happy. In a recent live broadcast, she called on people to stop using the line and explained her thoughts on the situation.

Sorn started by admitting, “I’m really used to all these negative comments because there’s so many haters out there apparently.” However, she went on to ask fans to think of how Yujin would feel seeing the diss repeated over and over—especially given how hard she’s working to make it to Girls Planet 999‘s final lineup.

"But think of what my member who is on that show would feel if she knows that this is what is happening on the internet while she’s working her ass off on the show trying to make it over there." — Sorn

Sorn went on to say that Yujin is going through “so much” as a contestant on the survival show. She added that while the words may not affect Yujin as much as they affect Sorn herself (given that Yujin isn’t fluent in English), “Humans are not stupid… we see it.”

"Imagine how much that affects her." — Sorn

Ultimately, Sorn told fans watching her broadcast, “I would really appreciate it if you guys would stop using that line.”

Over on social media, Cheshires agreed with her sentiments. While Sorn didn’t mention the current status of the group, many feel that the situation is exacerbated by Yujin’s recent revelation that Cube Entertainment will no longer be supporting CLC’s activities as a group.

"The company said the team [CLC] would not have any more activities." — Yujin

Fans went on to say that the line shouldn’t be used as a joke at the expense of Yujin and the rest of CLC. In the meantime, Sorn and her fellow members have been vehemently supporting Yujin’s journey to possibly re-debut with loving messages on Instagram and Twitter.

NCT’s Lucas Apologizes For Past Behavior Involving Ex-Girlfriends + SM Announces He Will Halt Activities - Trending News

NCT’s Lucas and SM Entertainment have released statements regarding the rumors of his actions towards his past girlfriends.

On August 23, a Korean netizen claiming to be Lucas’s ex-girlfriend uploaded a post on her social media and accused him of gaslighting and being a gold digger.

She explained that she had been a fan of Lucas until he approached her and they began dating. According to her, Lucas gaslighted her with words like, “I don’t like that you’re too much like a fan,” and “Don’t be a fan of an idol anymore,” when he was breaking up with her due to his busy schedule. She also stated that she had bought him luxurious gifts that he was initially thankful for but later rejected because he said he was “making enough money and didn’t need gifts unless it was a house or a car.” She wrote, “He always came to the hotel room, ordered room service, slept, and left. From the moment we checked out, he would go off the radar and keep his distance, saying he felt uncomfortable. He didn’t say a single word of gratitude and took it for granted that I was paying for him.” To back up her claims, she revealed her alleged chat logs with Lucas and photos he had sent her.

The next day, a Chinese netizen revealed that the Korean netizen’s experience had been similar to her own and claimed that Lucas had been dating her and the Korean netizen at the same time.

On August 25, SM Entertainment released a statement to announce that Lucas would be halting his activities to reflect on his actions. Read the statement below.

"Hello. This is SM Entertainment. We apologize for causing concern due to our artist Lucas’s personal life. We recognized the seriousness of this matter and have decided to to halt the release of all content for WayV’s Lucas and Hendery’s single “Jalapeño,” including the song and music video that were scheduled to be released on August 25 at 6 p.m. KST. Lucas is deeply reflecting on having caused great pain and disappointment due to his wrong behavior, and the agency also feels responsible for our poor management of the artist. We once again deeply apologize for causing concern to many people including fans with Lucas’s personal matters."

The same day, Lucas posted a handwritten letter of apology in Chinese on his Instagram, along with a Korean translation in the captions that he explains was translated with the help of those around him.

Here is a translation of his Korean statement:

"This is Lucas. I apologize to those who were hurt by my wrong behavior. If you give me a chance, I would like to personally convey my words of apology. I also genuinely apologize to my fans who have given me lots of love and support. While watching the situation during the past few days, I have looked back on my past behavior and sincerely reflected on it. Looking back on my behavior of the past, it was clearly wrong, and it was an irresponsible behavior that betrayed the support that my fans have shown me for a long time. I would like to once again apologize to everyone who was disappointed by my actions. I will make sure that something like this does not occur again, and I will halt all of my scheduled activities to take time to reflect on myself. Lastly, I would like to apologize to the members, company staff, the many cooperative firms, and broadcasting personnel for causing an inconvenience. I sincerely apologize."

Son Dam Bi And Jung Ryeo Won’s Agency Denies The Actresses Were Involved In A Fraud Scandal - Showbiz news

Son Dam Bi and Jung Ryeo Won’s agency has denied their involvement in a fraud scandal.

On August 28, H& Entertainment released a statement clarifying reports that the actresses had received gifts from a man who was arrested on charges of fraud.

Recently, a man identified as “Mr. Kim” pretended to be a wealthy man from Guryongpo (a town in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province) who had received an inheritance of 100 billion won (about $86 million). He lived a flashy lifestyle by showing off multiple expensive cars and boats and luxurious pool villas and pensions.

In April, he was arrested on charges of fraud, joint intimidation, and joint blackmail. He is accused of having pocketed major advance investments that he pretended were for a squid sales business between June 2018 and January 2021. The total amount that he defrauded is 11.6 billion won (about $10 million), and his victims include the brother of a former National Assembly member, a well-known journalist, and a private lecturer in Seoul. In particular, it is said that the brother of the former National Assembly member was defrauded of 8.6 billion won (about $7.4 million).

Among other things, Mr. Kim is also accused of lobbying various influential figures by gifting them seafood products, luxury goods, golf clubs, cars, and other things. In addition to Mr. Kim, eight suspects have been arrested on the charge of violating the Anti-Graft Act.

Media outlets reported that in 2019, Son Dam Bi’s manager was recruited as one of Mr. Kim’s company employees, and Mr. Kim gifted the actress with an expensive car and luxury clothing and purses through this connection. It was also claimed that Mr. Kim and Son Dam Bi had had a relationship and that Mr. Kim had paid the 50 million won (about $43,000) that Son Dam Bi had borrowed from Jung Ryeo Won. It was also said that when Son Dam Bi introduced him to Jung Ryeo Won, Jung Ryeo Won had received a car from him. According to the reports, when this was revealed, Mr. Kim and Son Dam Bi’s relationship ended and she returned the expensive gifts that he had given her.

Their agency statement reads:

"Hello, this is H& Entertainment.

We are deeply apologetic for causing concern with this unfavorable news during a time that is difficult for everyone. As an agency, we will take direct action when it comes to false reports about our artists Son Dam Bi and Jung Ryeo Won.

First, when she was in Pohang in 2019, Son Dam Bi was approached by Kim Tae Woo, a seafood businessman, who claimed to be a fan of hers. He gifted her with drinks and snacks. Later, Mr. Kim also attempted to give her expensive presents without her consent, and she immediately returned all the gifts and cash that he had given her.

We clearly state that Son Dam Bi has no connection to that businessman’s fraud scandal.

Second, it is not true that Jung Ryeo Won received a car as a gift from Mr. Kim.

Jung Ryeo Won’s car was purchased from a secondhand dealer and is not a gift from Mr. Kim. At a location where multiple other people were present, Mr. Kim first approached her by saying that he knew someone who worked in the auto industry. At the time, Jung Ryeo Won was looking into secondhand dealers to replace her car, and she asked Mr. Kim if he could find her the model that she was interested in. Mr. Kim said that his younger sibling owned a secondhand dealership and promised to get her the model she wanted. Through Mr. Kim’s introduction, Jung Ryeo Won obtained her car through a secondhand dealership. She received the car after depositing the proper payment into Mr. Kim’s account, and there are clear receipts for this.

Furthermore, it is not true that Jung Ryeo Won spent time with Mr. Kim at her house alone. Mr. Kim asked to consult with her on something and made an appointment to speak with her and her close friend.

Jung Ryeo Won and Son Dam Bi have suffered severe damage from the circulation and reproduction of false reports.

One-pan spaghetti with nduja, fennel & olives - Homemade Recipe

A spicy sausage pasta dish with a difference. Using the cooking water helps the sauce cling to the pasta and gives the dish more body. A silky smooth sauce, perfect pasta and one pan to wash!

Ingredients:

400g spaghetti
3 garlic cloves , very thinly sliced
½ fennel , halved and very thinly sliced
75g nduja or sobrasada paste
200g tomatoes (the best you can get), chopped into chunks
75g black olives , pitted and sliced
2 tsp tomato purée
3 tbsp olive oil , plus a drizzle
2 tsp red wine vinegar
40g pecorino , plus extra to serve
handful basil , torn

Procedure:

STEP 1
Boil the kettle. Put all the ingredients except the pecorino and basil in a wide saucepan or deep frying pan and season well. Pour over 800ml kettle-hot water and bring to a simmer, using your tongs to ease the spaghetti under the liquid as it starts to soften.

STEP 2
Simmer, uncovered, for 10-12 mins, tossing the spaghetti through the liquid every so often until it is cooked and the sauce is reduced and clinging to it. Add a splash more hot water if the sauce is too thick or does not cover the pasta while it cooks. Turn up the heat for the final few mins to drive off the excess liquid, leaving you with a rich sauce. Stir through the pecorino and basil, and serve with an extra drizzle of oil and pecorino on the side.
