Director Jason Reitman has revealed the official code name for the Ghostbusters 5 production. Arguably one of the most iconic films of the 1980s, Ghostbusters introduced audiences to Venkman (Bill Murray), Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) as the group begins their own paranormal investigation business to take down a number of ghosts and ghouls across Manhattan. The original Ghostbusters film went on to receive its own 1989 sequel, with director Ivan Reitman returning, as well as a 2016 reboot from Paul Feige, which many consider to exist in its own separate Ghostbusters universe.
Most recently, 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife saw the franchise revived once again. The latest sequel movie told the story of Spengler's family, who had been left his dilapidated farmhouse in Oklahoma after his passing. The new Ghostbusters film starred Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard, as well as bringing back Murray, Aykroyd, and Hudson in its final act to once again take down Gozer. Afterlife also saw the late Ramis return with the help of CGI, in a touching tribute to the actor. The film's end credits scene teased an exciting future for the franchise after Zeddemore was seen returning to the iconic firehouse that featured heavily in the original Ghostbusters, stating that he will "always be a Ghostbuster."
Following the announcement earlier this year that Sony would be moving forward with Ghostbusters 5, the official Ghostbusters Twitter account has now offered an interesting tease for the film's upcoming production. In honor of Ghostbusters Day on June 8 (which marks the anniversary of the original film's release) Ghostbusters: Afterlife's director, Reitman (the son of Ivan Reitman), shared the official code name for Ghostbusters 5, revealing it to be "Firehouse." Check out the posts below.
Given its release in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is largely considered to have been a box office success. Given this, news of a continuation was incredibly well-received by audiences, particularly following Afterlife's exciting end-credit tease. For now, it is not known if Afterlife's principal cast will return in Ghostbusters 5, nor whether Murray, Aykroyd, or Zeddemore will reprise their roles once again. However, these tweets do serve as confirmation of Reitman's involvement with the project, which up until this stage had not been confirmed. While Reitman has confirmed that Ghostbusters 5's story will begin at the firehouse, the code name's significance is otherwise unclear.
Code names are often used to disguise a project so that it can be referred to internally without risk of leaks. However, in this instance, it's exciting to see Reitman use "Firehouse" as an open tease for audiences. Taking the Ghostbusters franchise back to its Manhattan roots is certainly the logical next step for the franchise, and with the return of the beloved firehouse setting, Ghostbusters 5 looks likely to pack in the same nostalgia that played into Ghostbusters: Afterlife's success. With any sort of release window still yet to be confirmed for this upcoming installment, there is still a long while to go until the film is likely to hit theatres, although more details will now naturally begin to emerge as production progresses.
