New Outlast Trials Behind-The-Scenes Video Shows Interesting MoCap Sequences

Horror fans have been anticipating the release of Red Barrels' Outlast Trials, which will be the third entry in the disturbing series, or fourth if you count Whistleblower as its own separate installment. As one of the most heart stoppingly terrifying games out there, the Outlast universe has left a mark even on the most hardened of players. In preparation for the new game, the studio has been uploading a number of behind-the-scenes videos, and this latest one demonstrates some of the motion capture that's being used.

Titled "Trial #4: Animation," Red Barrels has given a little sneak peek into the work that's going into the next Outlast game. While many fans would probably prefer to see some gameplay footage or an update on a finalized release date, the video is still an interesting insight into the development process. It shows a number of actors in MoCap suits, some of whom are acting out what appear to be some gruesome death scenes. There's also the introduction of Mr. Noakes, an NPC that players will buy upgrades from during play.

It's quite fascinating to see the real life actions that are being captured, and anyone interested in behind-the-scenes footage, or anything related to motion capture, will likely get a kick out of this video. Not much else has been shown in terms of the game itself. Back in January, there were some disturbing screenshots from Outlast Trials, and these videos have been going up on occasion. Outside that, it's been rather quiet, though it looks as though the game is still on schedule for a 2022 release.

This newest entry in the series will be taking a slightly different approach. Perhaps to capitalize on the current online co-op horror trend, such examples being Dead by Dawn and Phasmophobia, Outlast Trials will lean more towards multiplayer, though there will be a solo campaign as well. Some fans may not be too keen on this idea, as what made the previous Outlast games so terrifying is the sense of helplessness and isolation that players felt while trying to survive.

That said, now seems like a good time to be a fan of all things spooky. The next twelve months are going to be interesting, especially with the likes of The Callisto Protocol and Scorn coming out this year. On top of that, there's the remake of Resident Evil 4, and the Silent Hill director's Slitterhead to look forward to as well. Outlast Trials is just one of many new horror games to keep an eye on.
