Seth Rogen Celebrates McLovin’s Birthday as Fans Beg for Superbad 2

Seth Rogen encouraged fans to celebrate the 41st birthday of Superbad's McLovin as talk of a sequel continues to circulate. Written by Rogen, long-time creative partner Evan Goldberg, and directed by Greg Mottola, the 2007 comedy follows high-school seniors Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) on a mission to supply an entire house part with alcohol—which results in a series of misadventures that test their friendship. In addition to Rogen, Hill, and Cera, the film stars Bill Hader, Emma Stone, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse as the one and only "McLovin."

At the beginning of Superbad, its heroes promise their crushes they'll supply the alcohol for what could be the last high-school party of their lives. Having no way to actually acquire the liquor, Seth and Evan recruit the help of the intrepid nerd Fogell. He brings them a fake ID sporting his new name, McLovin, with a birthday of June 3, 1981. While Mohammed may have been the better choice, "McLovin" plays. That is until a convenience store robbery separates Fogell from his friends. Fortunately, he makes new friends in Officers Michael and Slater (Rogen and Hader), who believe him to be McLovin and help to make the mononym Superbad's most referenced joke.

On Friday, June 3, Officer Michaels himself took to Twitter to retweet a post reading, "Happy 41st birthday McLovin." Rogen captioned his post with a reminder to always celebrate McLovin Day.

Superbad grossed over $170 million at the worldwide box office and became an instant classic among audiences and critics alike. Despite its success, the film never generated a follow-up, with Cera and Hill saying a sequel just isn't necessary and, therefore, has never been discussed. The latter said that the only way he'd do Superbad 2 is if it took place in a retirement home where he and Cera are in their '80s and still single. Producer Judd Apatow recently responded to Hill's idea with an idea of his own, which would see Seth flunk out of college and then go visit Evan.

In 2020, Rogen echoed the sentiments of his cast saying he'd "100 percent probably never touch" Superbad as he doesn't think it "requires improvement or anything to be built upon it." Essentially, it's the one film of his he wouldn't want to make a sequel to as it risks tarnishing Superbad's legacy. Irrespective of fan interest, long-awaited sequels like Zoolander No. 2 and Dumb and Dumber To have proven that sometimes classics are better off left alone. That said, Superbad has certainly influenced spiritual successors in Blockers, Good Boys, Booksmart, and a handful of Apatow projects. While fans may never get an actual sequel, they'll always be able to celebrate McLovin Day.
