Resident Evil Village, Capcom’s eighth entry in the highly successful survival horror franchise, launched in May 2021 to critical and player acclaim. Coming out four years after Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which launched the new era of RE games fans are enjoying right now, Resident Evil Village became the fastest selling game in the series. In only a year, 5.7 million units were sold, which makes it hard to believe that there are still many gamers who haven’t played the action-packed title.
After the game’s launch anniversary passed without a peep from Capcom about any DLC, many fans looked hopefully toward Sony’s State of Play event on June 2 for news, to no avail. Instead, they got two things just as good: the announcements of a Resident Evil Village VR port and a remake of Resident Evil 4 due for release on March 23, 2023. Capcom already confirmed in 2021 that RE Village would be getting DLC; it’s just a question of when. Perhaps anticipation for the RE4 remake will hold fans over until more definitive DLC news is announced.
Possibly to keep up the hype for its upcoming RE projects, Capcom has made available a free demo of Resident Evil Village for those who haven’t yet begun the story of protagonist Ethan Winters. Using licensed Stadia technology, the demo can be streamed directly in Chrome and Safari (on iOS only) at up to 1080p resolution, without the need for a powerful gaming PC or console. And since it plays in a web browser, some people will even be able to try the demo on Android and iOS devices, as long as their phone or tablet can handle high-definition video. Whatever the platform, a download speed of at least 10Mbps is recommended to fully enjoy the demo.
The online streaming version of the Resident Evil Village demo is identical to the one available on other platforms, but the time limit has been removed and it can be played as many times as desired. And bonus, the demo is compatible with both the DualShock 4 and Xbox One controllers, as well as mouse and keyboard.
While waiting for news of Village DLC, fans of the franchise will be able to learn more about Resident Evil 4 Remake at the Capcom Showcase that takes place on June 13. Other than the tantalizing trailer shown at Sony’s State of Play, not much is known about the game, though that hasn’t stopped speculation. Some people noticed that in Capcom's press release, the company referred to RE4 as being “reawakened” rather than a “remake,” but it’s not quite clear what that means. Others have observed that the symbol seen in the reveal trailer seems to hint at a connection to Resident Evil Village, though only time will tell if that theory is on the right track.
